Article 2. That the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the word of God and the only rule of faith and practice.

  • 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
  • Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
  • 1 Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
  • Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
  • 2 Peter 1:19-21 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Article 3. We believe in the doctrine of election and that God chose his people in Christ before the foundation of the world.

  • Ephesians 1:4-6 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Article 4. We believe in the doctrine of original sin, and in man’s impotency to recover himself from the fallen state he is in by nature, by his own free will and ability.

Article 5.  We believe sinners are justified in the sight of God by the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ.

  • Romans 5:8-10 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
  • Romans 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
  • Titus 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Article 6.  We believe the elect are given eternal life solely by the direct work of the Holy Spirit and without the will of man. The giving of eternal life is also described in the scriptures as being born again, called, quickened, regenerated, and drawn. Good works, faith and gospel obedience are evidences of eternal life and are never the means to obtain or receive it.

  • Romans 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
  • 2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

  • Luke 22:19-20 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
  • Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

Article 9.  We believe in the resurrection of the dead and in a general judgment, and that the punishment of the wicked and joy of the righteous will be eternal.

  • John 5:28-29 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

This is the second death.15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Article 10.  We believe that no minister has a right to administer the ordinances, only such as are regularly baptized, and come under the imposition of hands by a presbytery.
